Are "Polls" Designed To Sway Public Opinion? You bet!

So we have 6 names on the CA ballot for President. The poll headlines keep reporting results from days old "head to head", McCain vs Obama, weighted, adjusted, tweaked, blow dried and then rushed to the media, mostly friends of the unRepublican candidate!
But wait a minute. What about Nader, Bob Barr, and Cynthia McKinney etc. If all the minor party candidates get a collective 3 to 5% of the vote in some/many stares, doesn't that effect the two major party candidates? I note some polls are stuck on stupid, asking weighted questions like "do you believe McCain will continue Bush policies?(and stop beating his wife) so to speak. This might be meaningful if those polled could name a Bush policy! However, there is hope. My faith in polls would get a boost if any asked the question: "Do you think Obama policies resemble those of Jimmy Carter?" To which Obama supporters reply, "Who is Jimmy Carter"?
